Abune Antonios

Abune Antonios (Tigrinya: ኣቡነ ኣንጦንዮስ; 11 July 1929 – 9 February 2022) was the third Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church and one of the most prominent figures in Eritrean religious and social history. Known for his unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and integrity, he became a symbol of resistance against the oppressive Eritrean regime's attempts to exert control over the Church.

Born in Hembrti, a town in the Eritrean highlands, Abune Antonios dedicated his life to the service of God and the spiritual well-being of the Eritrean people. From a young age, his calling to the priesthood was evident, and he worked tirelessly to serve his community. His deep faith and commitment to the Church's independence were key to his role in its leadership.

In 2004, Abune Antonios was elevated to the position of Patriarch, becoming the spiritual leader of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. However, his tenure was marked by growing tensions with the Eritrean government, particularly its interference in church matters. Abune Antonios spoke out against the government's attempts to control the Church's internal affairs, including its influence over the appointment of bishops and the restriction of religious freedoms. His stance on these issues led to his unjust deposition in 2006, when he was removed from office and placed under house arrest, silenced by the regime for his outspoken resistance.

Despite the hardships he faced, Abune Antonios remained steadfast in his beliefs, continuing to serve as a voice for the marginalized and a defender of the rights of the Church and its faithful. His courage and moral clarity earned him deep respect within Eritrea and across the Orthodox Christian world. Abune Antonios' legacy is one of spiritual leadership, defiance in the face of injustice, and an unyielding commitment to the values of truth, justice, and religious freedom.

He passed away on 9 February 2022, leaving behind a lasting impact on the Church and Eritrean society. His life and sacrifices remain an inspiration to all those who continue to fight for religious freedom and human dignity in Eritrea and beyond.

"The truth will set you free." - Abune Antonios
